Initial training completed by new Gurkha recruits

Just over two months ago, Britain's newest Gurkha recruits arrived at Catterick Garrison, fresh from stepping off a flight from Nepal.

Now, they've reached their first rite of passage. It's called 'Passing Off The Square' and sees them being assessed on their overall performance, standard of dress, turnout and individual drill.

The 2018 intake of Gurkha recruits were recently assessed on their ability to perform individual and platoon-level drills. The assessment provides confirmation to the training team that the recruits can carryout drill movements, such as marching and saluting. The assessment began with a rigorous inspection, paying particular attention to the standard of uniform. Following that, individual and platoon drill assessments tested each recruit's ability to perform drill movements and respond to commands.

In addition to the drill assessment, recruits were also tested on their Close Quarter Combat (CQC) skills in the presence of Master Rastra Rai (Sixth Dan in International Taekwondo-Do Federation and World Taekwondo Federation).

The CQC part of the assessment is an important one, which tests the recruits' use of the Khukuri. On the successful completion of this, trainees are presented with a ceremonial Khukuri, which they keep in recognition of their service as a Gurkha soldier in the British Army.

The final point of the day saw the presentation of prizes for individual and platoon winners by Lieutenant Colonel Simon Davies, commanding officer 2nd Infantry Training Battalion.

The Gurkhas will now move on to the Combat Infantryman's Course.
