Some of you will be far too young to remember the actress Hedy Lamarr, the glamorous star of many films around the time of WWII. Less well-known, perhaps, was her success in developing a radio guidance system which used spread spectrum frequency hopping, and which eventually led to the development of Bluetooth.


The arts and sciences are often seen as opposites, but true scientific achievement depends on imagination and for thespians that is their stock in trade. Defence and security depends wholly upon staying one step ahead of potential foes and for that a vivid imagination is essential. The arts and sciences have much to offer each other.
